Some of the songs wouldn't pass muster in today's puritanical climate. "There is nothing like a dame" comes to mind. Hard to go past "Some Enchanted Evening" as a really good love song. They don't make 'em like that any more.
Some Enchanted Evening was a personal fave of Dad's & he had all the shows on vinyl, that I have now inherited...Ezio Pinza a name etched on my then small memory bank... ( along with Fangio, F1 also a passion.) Nobody in our fam cares much for show-tune revisionism.
Many, many years ago I read Michener's books, but not Tales of the South Pacific for some reason: I did see the movie. As you illustrate Michener's prose is superb. "Caravan", "The Drifters", "Chesapeake" and many others excited my imagination as a young man.
How apt to recollect this tale, and underlying theme now. And my personal favourite - ‘This Nearly Was Mine’.

Pathetic that they wouldn’t ‘pass muster’. I feel sorry for today’s censored woke. They miss out on so much mushy romance.

I totally agree. Mind you, at 12, I had a huge crush on Rossano Brazzi!
They did a remake with Glenn Close as Nellie Forbush. I am going to try and source a copy.
Brazzi! Be still my trembling heart.
A delightful read, thanks David
