Interesting that Tolkein thought it was so bad.....nobodies perfect!

The first movie completely nailed the mood of the book and they did a great job of the duelling with energy shields. The duelling, that strange mix of the archaic with the futuristic, stuck with me the most. It's a theme reflected throughout the books.

You didn't mention Dune II the computer game, made by Westwood Studios. I had it on my old Amiga 500 and it actually introduced me to the books. The game was a bit of a big deal as well it was the pre-eminent "Real Time Strategy (RTS) Game", from it came the Command and Conquer series that was hugely successful.

A lot of modern games owe a huge favour to Dune, Frank Herberts vision penetrating into the culture both far and wide.

Can't wait for the new one!

Thanks for the comment. I shall have to have another look at the first movie and the duelling. I think I recall the point you were making.

Dune II - I do have it for the PC. It is very nostalgia inducing for those early games.

I also have Dune 2000 and Emperor - Battle for Dune both of which are Westwood Games and the same sort of C & C approach.

Steam released Dune - Spice Wars about 18 months ago - it is really quite brilliant, complex and a lot of fun.

The new movie is due out soon I believe? Are you also a George R.R. Martin fan? His characters don't get the "plot armour" that so many others do and I find hard to cope with so many favourites being killed off. But I'm getting to know well now LOTR (and all Tolkien), Dune and Game Of Thrones because of my son's readings (he reads them out loud to me after he's read them). Another of Dom's favourites is Raymond E Feist.

Quite. The movie (part 2) is released on Thursday.

Have a look at this clip - most of it portrays Paul's first ride on Shai-Halud https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CA1VLfHXZm4 - just brilliant

I would not say I was a fan of Martin although I have been asked to write on Martin and Tolkien. I have been putting it off because the number of words in Martin's books - not to mention the darkness of his plots and his characters and the sense of futility that can only be compared to Ragnarok - turns me off a bit. Tolkien's tale is far tighter. Feist I have read. You should try Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea stories for your lad and see how he likes them

Thanks David good to know will try get movies weekend. Oh yes my son has read all the Earthsea stories. And Sword of Shannara / Terry Brookes and The Witcher book series. I never read any of these books myself so enjoy learning of them via him. He reads them then reads them aloud to me. It’s sad how many children (and adults too) miss out now on the wonderful worlds in books.

Has he seen Witcher on Netflix. Really great portrayal by Henry Cavell.

Maybe he should get into some classic SF. Robert Heineken’s Starship Troopers is a good start. Some say it is a bit right wing but who would know.

Yes we've watched the Witcher with Cavell. Dom has read books too. He's constantly pointing out all the DEI nonsense that the studio has brought in. Not to get him started on Rings Of Power! Which he critiques but nonetheless still watched. Did you see Dune yet? We might go tonight. Great blog on Campbell too. Will look forward to the RCR media panel.

Going to Dune 2 in the company of a group of fellow Duneatics next Sunday. Big screen. Big sound. Thanks for the comment on Campbell. I will send something else to you privately.
