Yes it seems highly ironic that this (insert your favourite slurs here) may be the man that we have to thank for protection of free speech, end to various foolish wars and possibly even reduction in global military spending and nuclear war threats. If he keep this up he *may* deserve the Nobel Peace Prize. History is stranger than fiction...

Problem is at what cost. Clearly Ukraine is going to be thrown under the bus.

Tragically, they always were being thrown under the bus... (Trump is of course disingenuous)

Dealing with Trump? What a nightmare. I feel for Rudd, I really do. He had a reputation for being a somewhat difficult person to deal with himself but he pales by comparison with that creature now occupying the most powerful political post on the planet.

I heard a story about Rudd however which is both endearing and very believable. He was dropping his wife and some family in his Prius at a restaurant in Noosa one evening in the pouring rain after which he was hailed by a couple of young blokes who thought he was there Uber driver, an easy enough mistake you would think. The challenge for publishers isn't the use of their content, it's the monetisation of it.

Meta, Google et al are able to scale in a way that publishers cannot. This has eroded margins to a point where traditional media is simply not viable. There are plenty of organisations or individuals who're making significant income from content creation, they're just of a new model.

As I see it, the real solution is leveling the playing field by requiring these 'platforms' to operate with the same duty of care as traditional media. This equalisation of cost base will go some way to ensuring traditional media remains viable.

In essence, if you curate content or advertising for consumers you cease to be a platform and are a publisher.

Your remark "Although the Fair Digital News Bargaining Bill may not yet be deep sixed, it is getting further away from a speedy enactment. And a very good thing too." is spot on.
