That performance crossed the line to disintegrate into farce (or as some are arguing riot). The Maori Party MPs are pushing the envelope and I hope the Speaker (and National Caucus) has the courage to put an end to it otherwise the spectre looms over us: Taiwanese parliamentary chamber behaviour in Wellington. And that would be disgraceful - where is the mana in that?
I think the National leader and his Caucus have taken advice from John Key, to their detriment. I won’t be voting for National again, go ACT. This is a pivotal time in NZ politics where both Labour and National have shown themselves incapable of addressing the concerns of NZ’s long suffering middle. It doesn’t take a demagogue to attract these people, just a party that offers a return to basics and looking after the interests of middle NZ. It’s not Labour, National or NZ First.
Simon Wilson continues the proud Woke tradition of flat out denial of incontrovertible realities. He thinks he's correct simply because he strongly FEELS some things. And he's silly and arrogant enough to think he can persuade smart people to his loopy world view. Mercifully he's a transparently just a shallow, bitter ideologue
Excellent, thank you. Wilson and his ilk continue to play identity politics and the majority (an evil word according to racist Willy), have had enough.
Trump’s victory is perhaps summed up by the great slogan “Kamala is for they/them, President Trump is for you.”
I looked up the meaning of demagogue... just to be sure.
I read this : a leader who makes use of popular prejudices and false claims and promises in order to gain power. And this : a person, especially an orator or political leader, who gains power and popularity by arousing the emotions, passions, and prejudices of the people.
Haven't we already had that?? y' know ... prejudices... false claims... promises.... to gain power.... ("it's a pandemic of the unvaccinated" , "if you get vaccinated you won't get covid", "it's safe and effective", "we will be your single source of truth", "yep, yep, that's what it is"...)
Probably have. Simon uses the term in the most derogatory fashion. In the context of his writing it is a term of loathing - as if the Left didn't have demagogues.
Very good. Like I posted to Simon's post, I also recommend a very insightful video that affirms your analysis is the very good YouTube video "Philosopher Michael Sandel on What Trump’s Win Says About American Society" - and similar arguments apply to NZ.
The Left, in its blinkered well meaning rush to make a better world, allows the tail to wag the dog (which inevitably gets sick of being wagged - typically with an over the top aggressive reaction if the wagging has gone on long enough for the dog to get to that stage).
I am hoping that the current government can put the brakes on the tail so the dog can have a rest. I see the passing of the Treaty Principles (Referendum) Bill as critical to that. The people having their say now peacefully and publicly followed by a ballot if only to acknowledge growing concerns that the various “Estates” are no longer unbiased and acting in the overall best interests of the general population.
And then maybe, just maybe, having stopped the rot the nation as a whole can move on and resume working together to build a stable, thriving, multicultural nation the envy of all other less than perfect nations.
Fingers crossed but not hopeful as long as National refuses to take this bull by its horns.
I don't think it will take the bull by the horns despite the fact that a recent survey suggested that 2/3 of New Zealanders favoured the Bill. Whaty the Left is afraid of is a vote similalr to the NO Vote in Australia and Te Pati Maori probably most of all. Thing is that if National continues on its present path they will bleed votes in the next election.
The bleeding may well turn into a haemorrhage after the disgraceful performance by some Maori MPs in Parliament yesterday.
Performative politics. Its what you do when you haven't an arguement.

I think that many will do the same.

In spite of all the analysis by "Progressives" and social justice mavins like Simon Wilson Trump must have done something right to :
a) have effectively a landslide in both the electoral college and general vote, and
b) increase his numbers in the demographics traditionally Democrat voters.
Excellent, thank you. Wilson and his ilk continue to play identity politics and the majority (an evil word according to racist Willy), have had enough.

Trumpt has some good writers.
